You can use the preview panel to display a selected email without opening it in a separate window.

To preview or open an email:

If the preview panel is enabled, click once on an email to view it in the preview panel. To open an email in its own window, double-click the email or right-click the email and select Open in New Window.
If the preview panel; is disabled, click once on an email to open it in its own window.

To display or hide the preview panel:

Click the Settings link, located in the upper right corner of the webmail window.
Select or clear the Display the preview panel check box.
